Pfannenberg: High cooling capacity combined with small footprint

February 24, 2020

With its EB 2.0 L series, production safety specialist Pfannenberg has developed six chillers with high-quality equipment that are tailored to the advanced cooling requirements of compact industrial applications. As of now, the new series replaces and extends the devices of the previous EB Large series. Apart from a higher cooling performance, the new devices are provided with various additional features such as hydraulic safety equipment, filter monitoring and remote-controlled ON/OFF switch.

Optionally, the devices are available with industrial interfaces, bus and Ethernet interfaces as well as with UL508a-certification and accessories for operation with air-water heat exchangers. The amount of refrigerant used has been more than halved compared to the predecessors and to most of the competitor devices of this performance class.

“More flexibility, environmental sustainability, easier maintenance and higher performance were the key objectives of the development of our EB series,” says Uwe Eckstein, Product Manager Liquid Cooling Solutions EMEA at Pfannenberg. “The comprehensive optimisation of the chillers’ interior equipment, from the refrigeration circuit to hydraulics and cabling details, facilitates not only maintenance and commissioning but also offers substantial advantages in the operation of both the chiller and the associated industrial plants.”

Reduced use of refrigerants due to micro-channel technology

Similar to the usual design of compact devices with a lower cooling performance, the larger Pfannenberg chillers now also feature condensers with micro-channel technology allowing for a more compact design but above all for a considerable reduction of the refrigerant demand by up to 70%. The standard devices of the EB 2.0L series can be used at temperatures of between +15°C and +45°C.

The cooling media  to be used are water or water/glycol mixtures. Outdoor units suitable for use at temperatures from -25°C to +15°C are available on request.

Clear responsibilities and effective service from a single source

When designing the chillers, and here in particular regarding their electrical equipment, Pfannenberg always makes sure that all applicable standards and directives are fully met. Every cooling unit fulfils machine directive and is CE compliant already before being integrated into the customer’s plant. With respect to safety aspects and CE conformity, all requirements are fully considered in the chiller’s design and will not be delegated to the responsibility of the customer.

Even if a Pfannenberg cooling system consists of several components, the boundary line between the cooling system and the customer’s plant will be clearly defined. This leads to clear responsibilities that will not only reduce the operator’s legal risks but also, regarding any service activities required, provide a great advantage in terms of response time and cost – ultimately offering extra safety for man, machine and the environment.
