Banner Engineering: K50Z Multipoint Sensor – Comprehensive Area Detection with One Device
June 7, 2024
The K50Z Multipoint Sensor delivers reliable measurement across a wide area, ensuring detection of irregularly-shaped objects like mesh carts or pallets with holes.
It can also measure inconsistently placed items like large automotive parts on a conveyor or boxes filling a cart, useful for overfill and underfill prevention. Instead of employing multiple single-point sensors, the K50Z uses 3D time-of-flight technology and a wide beam angle to detect objects up to 2 meters away using 64 measurement points. It can be configured to measure two separate areas, effectively doing the work of two sensors in one convenient device.
Reliable Measurement and Detection Across a Wide Viewing Area
Measurement and detection across a large area is made possible by the K50Z’s wide 45 x 45 degree beam angle with a 2-meter range. A short 20-millimeter dead zone also lets the K50Z measure objects in close proximity. With 64 measurement points, the 8 x 8 pixel array can detect targets anywhere within the wide field of view by providing more information than a single-point sensor.
Two Independent Outputs Use Less Hardware and Reduce Commissioning Time
The K50Z has two independently configured outputs, allowing it to monitor two separate areas within its field of view. This lets system designers use one sensor instead of multiple by configuring each output’s Region of Interest (ROI), thresholds, and measurement mode. Banner Measurement Sensor Software provides simple and intuitive configuration, and visualizes measurements to facilitate setup.
Two measurement modes are available: nearest distance, which measures targets closest to the face of the sensor for object detection; and average distance, which smooths out peaks and valleys in a measurement area for monitoring fill levels as product accumulates. The K50Z can be easily integrated into different control systems using three available output types: discrete, IO-Link, or PFM.
