Leviton: ATLAS-X1 SST MILLENNIUM Global System with Extended Distance Solution

September 10, 2024

Leviton recently announced the launch of new extended distance capabilities for the ATLAS-X1 SST MILLENNIUM System.

Leviton’s Systems Verification Lab (SVL) invested thousands of hours putting the MILLENNIUM ATLAS-X1 SST system through its paces with rigorous testing, including both thermal cycling and bit error rate testing. As a result of this extensive testing, Leviton is announcing that this premier global Cat 6A UTP structured cabling system now supports longer, warrantied four (4) connector channel distances, thermal cycled to 60° C (140° F) with 1000BASE-T and Type 1 PoE out to 155 meters (508 feet).

The system also supports 2.5 Gbps to 140 m (459 ft) and 5 Gbps to 110 m (360 ft) while providing support for PoE up to 100 Watts. All of this was tested with SST CMR, CPR, and Outdoor cables. The new SST Outdoor cable is a gel-free 6A cable with premier performance and a weather-resistant jacket. The design features Precision Twist technology and a small outside diameter.

The globally available ATLAS-X1 SST MILLENNIUM system features high performing ATLAS-X1 jack modules and industry-leading SST cable, providing reliable high performance for mission critical applications and assurance for network managers. All MILLENNIUM Copper Systems include a wide array of options in modular or 110-style patch panels as well as Leviton’s innovative global patch cord platform, which features a compact plug-and-boot for reliable high-performance connections.

“Today’s network designers are challenged with finding reliable, warrantied solutions for supporting multi-gigabit links beyond the 100-meter standard for utility LAN applications or as we call it ULAN applications,” said Mike Good, Copper Cables Product Manager for Leviton. “The ATLAS-X1 SST MILLENNIUM System does this to connect cameras or other Ethernet enabled utility devices at extended distances, while providing premier Cat 6A performance for standards-compliant links. The ability to use one solution throughout the network, and across sites globally, simplifies project BOMs and onsite material management.”

In the U.S., Berk-Tek (acquired by Leviton in 2020) started offering extended distance application assurance as far back as 2012 with the LANMARK 2000 cable.

“When we say we have invested thousands of hours into rigorously testing cables and systems with extended distance applications, we mean it. Since 2012, when we first provided extended distance application assurance to LANMARK 2000 till now, we have never stopped testing and experimenting to improve. We thermal cycle our systems to 60C (140F) over eight hours in four connector configurations and simultaneously transmit various PoE types in cable bundles using multiple brands of Ethernet switches to get a true picture of real-world applications,” said Eric Lawrence, Senior Director of Research and Development with Leviton.

“We use frame error testing because it is the most rigorous test, if one bit is bad, the entire frame is bad and discarded per Ethernet protocols causing delays and affecting the user experience. We truly understand the limits of what is physically possible under real world conditions. This is why Leviton warrantees our extended distance applications, and we use standards compliant product so one system can do it all,” Eric would continue.

The new enhanced distances are backed by Leviton’s Application Assurance Warranty and as described, have undergone rigorous testing in Leviton’s SVL. Engineers and industry experts at the SVL both modeled and tested the ATLAS-X1 SST MILLENNIUM system and considered factors like elevated temperatures, equipment age, and other environmental conditions that could affect network performance. Multiple brands of commonly available network equipment were used to ensure that laboratory results accurately reflect real-world performance.
