Mersen’s Collaboration With the Polar Pod to Study the World’s Climate Stability and Biodiversity

March 22, 2021

Mersen is embarking, alongside Jean-Louis Etienne and the Polar Pod’s scientific crew, on an extraordinary human and scientific endeavor that will contribute to our understanding of the relationship between the atmosphere and our oceans and the fight against climate change.

The Polar Pod is an international oceanographic station. The program, which is coordinated by the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in partnership with the French National Space Agency (CNES) and the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER), focuses on four areas of research: air/ocean exchange, Southern Ocean monitoring, biodiversity survey and human impacts.

The project also includes an educational program that will bring the expedition and its discoveries to life, providing future generations with a richer learning experience.

Mersen is proud to contribute its energy management and power electronics expertise to ensure the Polar Pod platform’s optimal autonomous performance.

Luc Themelin, Chief Executive Officer of Mersen, said: “Mersen is proud to embark on this adventure alongside Jean-Louis Etienne in a technological and scientific challenge that will help provide a better understanding of our planet. We are convinced that our products and solutions are essential to progress and technological innovation, giving us a role to play in protecting the environment and its resources. Working alongside Polar Pod is an opportunity to make a real contribution to an extraordinary human and scientific endeavor that will provide new insight into the impact our oceans have on Earth’s climate and the actions we need to take to act against global warming.”

A recognized provider in solutions to foster growth in green industries, Mersen is committed to combating global warming and recently made an ambitious pledge to reduce the intensity of the Group’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Group has set a target to reduce the intensity of GHG emissions from its operations (Scopes 1 and 2) by 20% between 2018 (base year) and 2025.
