Siemens New Generator Circuit-breaker Offers Advanced Customization
November 15, 2019
With its HB3-Compact generator circuit-breaker, Siemens provides a unique generator circuit breaker solution to the most challenging constraints. Offering more customization options, the generator circuit-breaker can be mounted either vertically or horizontally, and its phase-to phase spacing and phase height axis can be adjusted to match perfectly to the existing busbar connection points. The circuit-breaker can also be fitted with integrated line disconnecting switch and earth disconnecting switch on generator side and/or on transformer side. These features make it especially valuable for retrofit applications in power plants, where the highest security of supply is crucial, and space is limited due to existing installations.
With the increasing percentage of renewable power, reliable protection technology is needed to handle higher voltages resulting from temporary higher power infeed, for example. Generator circuit-breakers are key components for improving the reliability and availability of power plants. They protect equipment such as generators and transformers against overload or short circuiting by disconnecting and connecting them from and to the grid.
With its adaptable design and installation, the new HB3-Compact model offers power plant operators the greatest degree of flexibility when designing a new plant or replacing outdated equipment. It has a simplified footprint, which facilitates the designing and dimensioning of the switchgear. The supporting frame design can be customized, meaning the phases can be fitted in one common or an individual frame design to enable splitting of the phases, for example when installing in different rooms.
Besides this flexibility in design, HB3-C also supports plant operators in saving costs during project implementation and operation. Thanks to the unit’s compact size, its transport, erection and commissioning are simplified and outage times for the installation of a new circuit-breaker can be kept to a minimum. The maintenance-free vacuum switching technology used in the switchgears eliminates the need for gas handling, guarantees minimum maintenance costs and increases the recycling rate of the HB3 systems. The HB3-C is part of the Siemens Blue Portfolio, combining high-tech performance with environmentally safe materials and work procedures.

The metal housings in the Han EMV and Han HPR series are now also available in versions that enable contact inserts to be mounted from the rear — an option that simplifies the placement of interfaces on switch cabinet walls and increases the installation speed and thus lowers costs in the long term. HARTING has produced other connector types that feature a rear-fit mounting option.
Siemens and Zeta have entered into a strategic partnership. The aim of both companies is to drive forward the digital transformation of pharmaceutical processes worldwide. Zeta, a specialist with many years of experience in major projects for the biopharmaceutical industry, takes the role of the system integrator thanks to their process expertise from the pharmaceutical sector. In partnership with Zeta, Siemens acts as the system provider offering software platforms with their Digital Enterprise Portfolio.
The EJxxxx EtherCAT plug-in modules are electronically based on the well-known EtherCAT I/O system and their design allows them to be directly attached to a circuit board. The circuit board is an application-specific signal distribution board that distributes signals and power supply to individual application-specific plug connectors in order to connect the controller to further machine modules.
Littelfuse, Inc. has recently launched its Class J Fuse Disconnect Switch. The compact device combines a switch and multiple fuses into a single product offering a simpler way to manually open and close a circuit while safeguarding against overcurrent and short circuits. When the switch detects an overload or short circuit, the fuse blows automatically to open or break the circuit both upstream and downstream and shuts off the equipment.
Phoenix Contact has increased the efficiency and power density of its popular STEP POWER power supplies. The third generation of STEP POWER keeps the same footprints as the previous version, measuring just 55 millimeters deep and with widths starting at just 18 millimeters. The STEP 3 power supplies were designed primarily for the building automation industry and have EN 60355-1 certification.
AutomationDirect has added the RHINO PSE-S series power supplies which are fully encapsulated in ultra-compact, low-profile housings and ideal for space-limited applications. These cost-effective power supplies offer a wide input voltage range, up to 89% efficiency, and are available in 5, 12, 15, and 24 VDC output voltage options with up to 4.1A/50W. Select models are NEC Class 2 compliant.
