Infineon’s CAPSENSE HMI Technology Improves Reliability and Power Consumption
December 27, 2021
Infineon Technologies has announced its 5th generation CAPSENSE™ capacitive and inductive touch sensing human-machine interface (HMI) technology. The next-generation CAPSENSE solution built into the PSoC™ microcontroller contributes to the higher performance and lower power consumption user interfaces required for consumer electronics, industrial equipment, consumer and IoT products. The newly enhanced HMI enables advanced solutions such as proximity detection with an extended detection range, gesture detection, directivity, and hover detection for more advanced touch screens in the future.
The new CAPSENSE technology, which boasts 10 times the performance and 1/10 the power consumption of the previous generation, not only enables designers to develop more intuitive user interfaces, but also reduces the total power consumption of products and devices. Meet battery-powered IoT device development requirements while significantly reducing. The latest generation of CAPSENSE is ideal for consumer electronics and industrial applications, including smart door locks and smart switches, thermostats, smart speakers, power tools, touch screens for industrial equipment and other IoT devices. This new technology is also ideal for applications with large touch screens, such as appliances and industrial equipment such as IH cooking heaters, washer / dryers, refrigerators and ovens.
Steve Tateosian, Infineon’s vice president of IoT Compute & Wireless (ICW), designed 5th generation CAPSENSE technology as a leader in capacitive touch sensor technology with a sales record of 4 billion units. “We are very pleased to be able to provide this to our customers. This new generation of CAPSENSE technology builds on our established leadership to build a whole new ratiometric and differential sensing architecture, which improves noise immunity. We provide a robust and reliable HMI solution that operates in harsh environments with extreme electrical noise and in extreme weather and temperatures.”
Infineon’s proprietary CAPSENSE technology strongly assists designers in developing more sophisticated HMIs for the various touch-sensing user interface requirements of future devices. It’s ultra-low power consumption and fits in a smaller form factor, making it ideal for touch interfaces in wearables, hearables, and smart IoT applications. The new CAPSENSE technology enables advanced HMI solutions such as proximity detection with extended detection range, gesture detection and directivity. In addition, the new autonomous sensing mode enables CPU-less operation, reducing power consumption while improving noise immunity and performance with the new ratiometric sensing architecture and differential transmission lines.
